Russia's State Duma passes law punishing soldiers for using internet-connected smartphones in combat zone

On 24 July, the Russian State Duma (the parliament's lower chamber) passed a law making it a serious offence for military personnel in Ukraine to have internet-enabled devices that can transmit geolocation data. Offenders will be arrested.

Details: Additionally, the law categorises as serious offences the violation of bans on sharing information with the media or online that reveals the affiliation or role of military personnel and citizens called up for military service in the Russian Armed Forces, other military units, or organisations.

Under the law, disciplinary arrest can be imposed for up to 10 days for a single serious offence. 

Disciplinary arrest for multiple serious offences is determined by partially or fully combining arrest terms. In this case, the continuous period of disciplinary arrest for an offender must not exceed 15 days.
