Details: Ukraine will be represented in Paris by the smallest team in its history. 140 athletes will take part in 26 events. The largest number of team members, 25, is competing in athletics, and the smallest – just one – in badminton. Ukraine’s national football team will be taking part in the Olympic Games for the first time. The Olympic football tournament starts today, 24 July, and Ukraine will play Iraq in the opening match.

For pistol shooter Olena Kostevych, Paris will be her sixth Olympic Games. Kostevich won gold at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and has picked up multiple medals at the main sporting events of the last four years. And this is the fifth Games for sabre fencer Olha Kharlan, who won her first gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

At the last Games in Tokyo, Ukrainian athletes won 19 medals (1 gold, 6 silver and 12 bronze) and placed 44th in the medal table – the lowest in Ukraine's history.

The Ukrainian state rewards champions and prize-winners with a considerable amount of money, which is significantly higher than, for example, in the United States.

The Ukrainian national team includes 18 Olympic medallists from previous years and 6 Olympic champions.
