An assassination attempt was made on former Ukrainian MP Iryna Farion on Masaryk Street in Lviv on the evening of 19 July.

Details: As the media outlet has learned from its sources, Iryna Farion is in critical condition in a hospital on Topolna Street in Lviv.

She was admitted to the hospital's emergency department with a gunshot wound around 20:00. At the time of admission, her condition was critical. The patient was provided with emergency treatment.

Updated. The police in Lviv Oblast confirmed that an unknown person shot at a public figure on 19 July, though they did not reveal their name.

Law enforcement officials said that the police received a report at 19:30 on 19 July of an unknown man shooting at a woman passing by on Masaryk Street in Lviv.

"Law enforcement officers have identified the Lviv woman, 60, wounded in the attack. She has been taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to her head," the statement said.

The police reported that a special police operation was underway in Lviv and Lviv Oblast to detain the attacker, involving officers from all police services and units in Lviv Oblast.

Later, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed the attack on Farion, which was classified as "attempted premeditated murder". "The woman's condition is serious, doctors are fighting for her life," he said.

He added that the police and other necessary services were working at the scene of the shooting. They have collected witness statements and are processing data from CCTV cameras. The investigation is in an active phase. Klymenko noted that he regularly received reports from the police leadership on the measures taken and the circumstances established.

He urged citizens to provide the police with whatever information they have about the circumstances of the crime.

Updated at 23:07: ZAXID.NET reported that Nataliia Matolinets, Head of the Anaesthesia Service of the First TMO hospital, spoke about the condition of Iryna Farion after the attempted assassination. "Her condition is critical. She is in a deep brain coma. She is on artificial lung ventilation," the doctor said.

The hospital also said that they had removed all bone fragments from the gunshot wound and sutured it. However, Iryna Farion's condition is unstable, she has a threadlike pulse and her blood pressure is undetectable. The bullet cannot be removed as it is lodged in the deep tissues of the brain.

Later, Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi and the police reported that former MP Iryna Farion, the target of an assassination attempt on 19 July, had died in hospital.

  • On 12 February 2024, the Halytskyi District Court of Lviv refused to reinstate former MP Iryna Farion as a professor of the Ukrainian Language Department of the Institute of Humanities at the Lviv Polytechnic National University.

  • Farion reacted to her dismissal from Lviv Polytechnic University by stating that she was preparing a lawsuit.
  • On 29 May, the Lviv Court of Appeal ruled to reinstate Farion as a professor of the Ukrainian Language Department at the Institute of Humanities at Lviv Polytechnic National University.
