Paweł Zalewski, Poland's Deputy Minister of National Defence, says Warsaw is not involved in recruiting Ukrainians for the Ukrainian Legion, which will undergo training on Polish soil.

Details: Zalewski noted that the bilateral security agreement that provides for the training of the Ukrainian Legion in Poland does not impose any additional obligations on Warsaw. After all, the legion is a voluntary formation.

"The Polish state is not involved in this process because it cannot, pursuant to the law. Therefore, recruitment will take place with the help of Ukrainian consular offices," he said.

The official added that volunteers joining the legion will be "enlisted into the Ukrainian Armed Forces following Ukrainian regulations at Ukrainian consular offices" and will "receive basic training on Polish soil, conducted by the Polish Armed Forces".

"Responsibilities regarding equipment will be distinctly divided between what the Polish side provides and what the Ukrainian side ensures," Zalewski explained.

After the training, the soldiers from the Ukrainian Legion will be sent to Ukraine, "where, in accordance with Ukrainian law and in line with the tasks they will receive, they will serve on the front line".

"They will have the right to come back because it is also important that after their military service, they can come back to the place which they left, to the place where they left their families," the Polish official stressed.

Background:

  • The Ukraine-Poland security agreement provides for the creation of the Ukrainian Legion, which Ukrainians abroad will be able to join and receive training on a voluntary basis.
  • The Ukraine-Poland agreement also envisages the development of a mechanism to shoot down Russian missiles and drones flying towards Polish territory within Ukraine's airspace.
