Kyiv Zoo shows new home for spurred tortoises rescued from war – photos
The Kyiv Zoo has arranged summer grounds for the largest turtles of the facility: Uncle Sasha, Matylda and Cheburek. A group of spurred tortoises that were previously taken from the war-affected regions will also live there.
"The recreated wildlife corner, with a total area of 370 square metres, has three green huts. Shade canopies and umbrellas were installed to protect the turtles from the heat and rain.
These gigantic inhabitants of the land also like to take sand and water baths. Therefore, swimming pools and sandboxes are a great addition to their comfortable life," the Kyiv Zoo employees said.
Kyiv Zoo notes that spurred tortoises are herbivores. In particular, these reptiles like grass, hay, vegetables and fruits.
Hibiscus is a favourite delicacy of tortoises. The zoo staff grows this plant, especially for them, so they can enjoy it all year round.
You can see the animals in their new homes at the beginning of the Central Alley of Kyiv Zoo (right behind the house of monk parrots).
Recently, the Kyiv Zoo has arranged a new home for rescued owls and birds.
