Details: Zelenskyy said Kyiv would develop its relationship with the US regardless of the results of the forthcoming presidential elections and the composition of Congress.
"Regarding the way one of the presidential candidates, [Donald] Trump, envisions the end of the war: I understand it in general. I think that if Mr Trump becomes president, then we will work [together]. I’m not afraid of that," he stressed.
Zelenskyy noted that various stances are to be found among the Republicans, including some that are "more right-wing, radical".
"But I want to say to you: the majority in the Republican Party support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people," he summed up.
Separately, Zelenskyy commented on the risk of losing US assistance if Trump is elected president, stating that the €40 billion aid package for 2025 adopted at the NATO Summit would not be revisited.
Background:
- Former US president Donald Trump has boasted that he could end the war in Ukraine even before his inauguration in January.
- Politico has reported that Trump’s team is said to be seriously considering the option of cutting a "deal with the Kremlin" to end the Russo-Ukrainian war, which would mean no NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia and territorial concessions by Ukraine.
