The Russian government has claimed that it’s "not surprised" by the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, and that it was facilitated by "the atmosphere created around candidate Trump by this administration during the political battle".

Details: On behalf of the Kremlin, Peskov condemned the manifestations of violence during the political battle, wished Trump and the other people injured in the shooting a speedy recovery, and expressed his condolences to the family of the victim.

Peskov hinted, however, that the Kremlin was not surprised by the attempt on Trump’s life because of the "atmosphere that has been created around him".

"After numerous attempts to remove candidate Trump from the political arena – using first legal tools, trials, prosecutors, attempts to politically discredit him – it was obvious to all outside observers that his life was in danger […].

We do not think and do not believe that the attempt to eliminate presidential candidate Trump was orchestrated by the current authorities, but the atmosphere created by this administration in the course of the political battle, the atmosphere around candidate Trump, provoked the events that America is confronting today," he claimed.

Peskov also saw a connection between the attempt on Trump’s life and the Biden administration’s foreign policy.

"It’s typical for the current [US] administration to solve all issues from the position of force, especially global issues… There are the sanctions this administration loves so much, and political pressure, or even direct use of forceful methods, military force. Now violence has basically become normalised within the country," Peskov concluded.

Background: Leaders of the US’s European partner states have responded with shock to the attempt on Trump’s life and condemned the attack, while China has discreetly expressed concern.

Meanwhile Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze made a reference to the "Global War Party" in his comment on the assassination attempt on Trump.
