Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has said that the delay in providing aid to Ukraine has only prolonged the war.

Details: McConnell stressed that the Ukrainians on the battlefield do not need doubts but need tools to defend themselves, increase the cost of aggression for the aggressor, and create conditions for a conversation from a position of strength.

Quote: "Slow-walking aid to Ukraine didn’t stave off further Russian escalation. It only guaranteed that this terrible conflict will be longer and bloodier.

Conditioning further assistance will weaken Ukraine’s hand and risk emboldening the very tyrant we hope to defeat.

The security of the free world will either be strengthened by our friends’ [Ukraine’s – ed.] victory or weakened by their defeat."

Background:

  • Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said that his country was in favour of restraint in the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to NATO to prevent escalation.
  • At a press conference, Polish President Andrzej Duda spoke out against sending Polish troops to Ukraine and hoped that "Russia would not bring it to such a situation."
