In reaction to Russian leader Vladimir Putin's remarks concerning the purported "illegitimacy" of Zelenskyy’s presidency, he stated that Putin is the only person who recognises the current Russian "president" as legitimate, whereas in Ukraine, the president is elected by the people themselves.

Quote: "The Ukrainian people are the only ones who can recognise President Zelenskyy's legitimacy. The Ukrainian people have made their choice, and I am thankful for their support. Our people are free. To be honest, we're fighting precisely for this.

The legitimacy of comrade Putin is recognised only by comrade Putin himself. Only Putin elects Putin. Russians are the scenery, with only one performer on stage."

Previously: Russian leader Vladimir Putin said he believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's legitimacy has "come to an end".

Subsequently, Putin said that "according to preliminary estimates, the only legitimate power of Ukraine remains the parliament and the speaker of the Rada [Ukraine’s parliament]".

Background:

  • Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it sees no reason to recognise Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin as the democratically elected and legitimate president of Russia.
  • Zelenskyy stated that dialogue with Vladimir Putin is impossible at the moment since Putin is not an independent figure, and he lives in a vacuum of hate towards Ukraine supported by his inner circle.
  • The European Commission responded to a Russian propaganda claim that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not the legitimate president of Ukraine because his five-year presidential term ended on 21 May 2024.
  • The European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the manner in which Vladimir Putin's sham re-election was conducted and calling for those elections not to be declared legitimate.
