The journalists noted that the man has been posting photos of himself wearing military uniform on social media and noting that he has been "guarding Russia since 2014". He also served in the so-called LPR police (LPR is the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic).

Suspilne's sources indicated that Kiprin currently serves with the Shtorm assault group of the 153rd Tank Regiment of the 47th Guards Tank Division of the 1st Tank Army.

The investigators contacted the Russian on WhatsApp to get confirmation that it was him in the video.

"The man, thinking he was corresponding with a Russian propagandist, wrote: "The anthem was sung badly. They were slapped and transferred to a prisoner-of-war camp. Usually, during a mop-up, there is no time to evacuate your own people; there are captives here."

Background:

  • On 2 June, Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament’s Human Rights Commissioner, contacted the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN, following the recent release of a video showing the abuse of Ukrainian prisoners of war that is believed to have been filmed on the Kharkiv front.
  • On 3 June, the prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the abuse of Ukrainian prisoners of war captured by the Russians on the Kharkiv front. The investigation indicates that the video shows Russian soldiers hurting Ukrainian soldiers and mimicking an execution by firing an assault rifle near the head of one of the prisoners of war. In addition, the video shows the Russians applying psychological pressure against the Ukrainian defenders, forcing them to sing the USSR anthem.
