One of the injured, Sigitas Maliauskas, stressed that this would not stop Lithuanians from providing all kinds of assistance to Ukraine but would only strengthen their resolve.

Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas said he was aware of the situation.

"We are aware of the situation. All Lithuanian institutions involved are now mobilising to bring the injured back to Lithuania as soon as possible and provide them with the necessary assistance," he said.

Background:

  • Earlier, it was reported that Estonian citizen Martin Jääger, who served in Ukraine's defence forces, had been killed in action.
  • In February 2024, Tadas Tumas, the first military volunteer from Lithuania to die in Ukraine, was killed in action and buried with honours in Vilnius.
