"I am confident that the day will come when Ukraine and Georgia will be in the European Union – together and forever," Zelenskyy said.

Salome Zourabichvili, who represents Georgia at the Peace Summit, often takes a stance opposite to that of her country's ruling Georgian Dream party.

Background:

  • The Georgian authorities have repeatedly accused the Ukrainian government and Western countries of calling for the opening of a "second front" on Georgian territory and have frequently criticised the Ukrainian leadership since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
  • Recently, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry condemned another unfriendly statement by Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who called Ukraine a "failed state" and found no one responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians.
  • In addition, Kobakhidze claimed that the opponents of the Georgian government want the "Ukrainisation of Georgia".
