Andrii Yermak, Chief of the Ukrainian President's Office, has confirmed that Ukraine is ready to invite a Russian representative to the second Peace Summit, where a "joint plan" agreed upon by most nations will be presented.

Details: Yermak stressed that Ukraine's stance on Russia's involvement in the Peace Summit has been repeatedly voiced and is "very clear".

"We will have a joint plan – we will think about how to invite Russian representatives to the second summit and, together with the countries that are with us on this path, we will present this agreed-upon joint plan, supported by a majority of respected and responsible countries worldwide," he said.

Yermak acknowledged that the summit attendees have different stances regarding Russia's non-participation in the current conference, but at previous meetings at the adviser level, Ukraine explained why Moscow should not be invited to the first summit.

Commenting on Russian leader Vladimir Putin's ultimatum on the eve of the Global Peace Summit, Yermak said: "I think the hysteria coming from the Kremlin confirms that we are on the right track."

Background:

  • Russia will not attend the conference in Switzerland, labelling the event biassed and the host country "openly hostile".
  • Moreover, on the eve of the summit, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin came up with new "conditions for the start of peace talks": Ukrainian forces must withdraw from the territory of four Ukrainian oblasts, parts of which are occupied by Russia, and Kyiv must declare that it has no plans to join NATO.
  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that Russia's representatives should be included in a future peace summit aimed at addressing an end to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
