US allocates US$1.5 billion to Ukraine for energy and humanitarian support

On the occasion of her participation in the Global Peace Summit, US Vice President Kamala Harris has announced the allocation of US$1.5 billion to Ukraine through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department to support the Ukrainian people.

Details: Most of the funds, US$500 million and US$324 million of the already announced funding, will be used to meet Ukraine’s emergency energy needs, particularly to repair damaged infrastructure.

More than US$379 million will go to humanitarian aid for refugees, internally displaced persons, and conflict-affected hromadas, including food, water, sanitation and hygiene services. [A hromada is an administrative unit designating a village, several villages, or a town, and their adjacent territories]

Another US$300 million will be used to support the civil security of Ukraine, providing equipment to Ukrainian border guards and law enforcement officers.

Quote: "These funds come as part of a larger foreign aid package spearheaded by President Biden to support the people of Ukraine," the White House said. 

They noted that since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022, the United States had allocated more than US$3.2 billion for humanitarian aid and almost US$1.5 billion for the recovery of Ukraine's energy sector.

Background: Earlier, US President Joe Biden and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a 10-year bilateral agreement on security to strengthen Kyiv's defence capabilities.
