Several states expressed support for Germany's initiative to find air defence systems for Kyiv at the 22nd meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (Ramstein format) on 20 May.

Details: The tweet indicates that the initiative to search for air defence systems for Ukraine will be funded by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway.

Additionally, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, Lithuania, Romania, the United States and France have promised to help with "equipment and missiles" (probably not necessarily within the framework of the German initiative), and Latvia has expressed a desire to join the initiative.

Background:

  • Earlier it became known that Germany's Finance Ministry has unofficially approved a request from Germany's Defence Ministry to allocate an additional €3.8 billion to help Ukraine in addition to the already announced €7.1 billion.
  • The German government launched an initiative on 17 April to find additional air defence equipment that could be sent to Ukraine. Berlin later reported that it was discussing funding for the initiative with Denmark and the Netherlands.
  • In April, Belgium also announced a €200 million contribution to the German initiative, and in May, Canada pledged more than US$55 million
