Zelenskyy vetoes law on firing employees for failing to report relatives in Russia and occupation

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has returned to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) draft law No. 7731, which would allow employers to fire employees for not informing them about contacts with people in the occupied territories.

Details: Zelenskyy submitted proposals to the draft law, which will be considered by the relevant committee.

The Verkhovna Rada adopted the draft law, introduced by MPs from the Servant of the People party, on 25 April.

The explanatory note stated that it was developed to "regulate labour relations at the legislative level to protect Ukraine's national interests in the context of armed aggression against Ukraine".

By the time of the second reading, the document included a provision on the right of employers to dismiss their employees if they failed to inform their management of their ties to people who remained in the temporarily occupied territories.

After that, eight human rights organisations in Ukraine asked Zelenskyy to veto the law, calling it "a ground for harassment and stigmatisation of those who have relatives in the occupation and people who are still registered there but have moved abroad".

Instead, Zelenskyy suggests MPs remove this clause.
