EU agrees on terms of continuing free trade with Ukraine with restrictions

On 8 April, representatives of key European Union institutions agreed to extend the agreement on preferential trade with Ukraine, which contains tougher restrictions on importing certain agricultural products.

The Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament have agreed on new preferential trade terms with Ukraine. Now they have to be voted on separately by European parliamentarians.

New trading conditions were agreed on at the level of permanent representatives of the EU countries at the end of March.

They provide for the extension of duty-free import of Ukrainian agricultural goods but limit it to poultry meat, eggs, sugar, corn, cereals, and honey at the level of the average volumes observed from mid-2021 to the end of 2023.

Poland and France have led efforts to limit Ukrainian agricultural imports in the EU.

Many experts call the current EU discussions on trade preferences for Kyiv a harbinger of difficult negotiations on the Ukrainian agricultural sector in the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
