Reminder of war. Ukrainian stand showcased at Bologna Book Fair – photo
The largest international children's book fair kicked off in Bologna on Monday, 8 March. Ukraine will be represented by 20 publishing houses, the Ukrainian Book Institute (UBI) has reported.
Publishers at the Ukrainian stand include Staryi Lev Publishing House, Vivat, Vydavnytstvo, Kalamar, Ranok, Mamino, Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and others.
"The Ukrainian Book Institute has been participating in the Bologna Children's Book Fair since 2018. We are here to make our voices heard by as many people as possible in Europe and worldwide. We are also here to show the incredible power of Ukrainian book publishing, which creates wonderful books for the youngest generations of readers despite the terrible war," said Oleksandra Koval, Head of the UBI.
This year, the Ukrainian stand was decorated in the style of The Yellow Butterfly, a "silent book" by illustrator Oleksandr Shatokhin. The book was included in the international list of outstanding children's publications in the United States and received the Best Design award from the Book Arsenal festival in Kyiv.
The space featuring yellow butterflies is complemented by postcards with stories about children who have been killed or deported by Russia. They also tell the stories of writers and translators killed in action or because of the war and of destroyed cultural infrastructure.
As part of the fair's programme, the event Tales of EUkraine: intermediate results will be held by Olena Odynoka, Deputy Director of the Ukrainian Book Institute for International Cooperation, and Enrico Turrin, Deputy Director of the Federation of European Publishers.
The Bologna Book Fair will take place from 8 to 11 April.
