UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and his French counterpart Stéphane Séjourné have jointly called on allies to do even more to ensure victory over Russia.

Source: European Pravda, citing Cameron and Séjourné in a joint column for The Telegraph, marking the 120th anniversary of the signing of the Entente – the alliance between the countries before and during the First World War.

Details: Cameron and Séjourné emphasised that the United Kingdom and France are absolutely clear: Ukraine must win the war waged against it by Russia.

"If Ukraine loses, we all lose. The costs of failing to support Ukraine now will be far greater than the costs of repelling Putin," they wrote.

Foreign ministers said that the world is watching and "will judge us if we fail".

"But as discussed during the Paris Conference in February, we must do even more to ensure we defeat Russia. … We must also continue to co-operate on other global challenges," Cameron and Séjourné pointed out.

Background:

  • The UK Foreign Secretary will travel to Washington this week and plans to use the visit to persuade members of Congress to vote for funding to further support Ukraine.
  • Before this, Cameron urged his European counterparts to exert pressure on the speaker of the House of Representatives.
  • Mike Turner, chairman of the US House Intelligence Committee, said that Johnson has promised to put the issue of providing assistance to Ukraine to a vote after Congress returns from the Easter recess on 9 April.
  • Johnson said that the US aid package for Ukraine will include "some important innovations", including the possibility of extending a US loan to Ukraine.
  • The US Senate passed a compromise bill last winter, combining assistance for Ukraine with a series of other national security measures, including measures to combat illegal migration at the Mexico border. However, Johnson indicated that he would not bring this bill to a vote in the House of Representatives; instead, they would prepare their own.
