Mike Turner, Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, believes that Russian propaganda gained some ground in the US Congress since the members of the Congress are spreading false narratives about Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Details: Turner stated that he agreed with congressman Michael McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Representatives, who had noted that "Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base".

"Oh, it’s absolutely true," Turner told CNN about McCaul’s remarks. "We see directly coming from Russia attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor," he added.

"I mean, there are members of Congress today, who still incorrectly say that this conflict between Russia and Ukraine is over NATO, which of course it is not," Turner said.

"Vladimir Putin has made it very clear, both publicly and to his own population, that his view is that this is a conflict of a much broader claim of Russia, to Eastern Europe, and including claiming all of Ukraine's territory as Russia’s,"  he added.

Turner noted that propaganda makes it more difficult to supply Ukraine with aid and to present a clear picture of a battle between democracy and authoritarianism.

Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced that the aid package for Ukraine would include "some important innovations", including the possibility of extending a US loan to Ukraine.

It is expected that when the Chamber of Representatives comes back from the break on 9 April, Johnson will reveal the details of the project on the aid for Ukraine which he will consider acceptable for Republicans, and it will finally be approved in both chambers.

Yet the debates between Republicans in the Chamber of Representatives may lead to another postponement of a long-anticipated decision on funding of the support for Ukraine and other allies.
