Details: While Latvia has sent drones purchased using donations from the public in the past, today's governmental decision marks the first major batch of drones.
Defence Minister Andris Spruds said it is Latvia's first major contribution to the coalition.
Local industry is involved in the procurement, meaning that the drone coalition is swiftly gaining momentum in support of Ukraine.
Spruds added that the drones destined for Ukraine are of high quality and have been tested.
Latvia will allocate at least €10 million a year for the development of the drone coalition. The coalition’s members aim to provide one million drones for Ukraine's needs.
Background:
- The UK, along with Latvia, leads the international drone coalition formed within the framework of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, also known as the Ramstein group.
- British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in January that the UK would allocate £200 million to manufacture various types of drones for the Ukrainian military.
