It was impossible to protect it: Head of recovery agency explains why Trypillia power plant protection failed
The Trypillia thermal power plant (TPP) was a very large facility that could not be fully protected by fortifications alone. Use of appropriate air defence systems was essential.

Details: The State Agency for Restoration only provides protection for some of the facilities in the distribution network, not all of them. Experts are working to protect 22 Ukrenergo distribution substations at the second and third levels – protection from drones and missiles. The construction of facilities at the third level of protection is underfunded.
"Regarding Centrenergo's facilities, the State Agency for Restoration was not involved in their protection, including the Tripillia TPP. It should be noted that the Trypillia TPP is a very large facility, and it is impossible, I think, to protect it entirely with only protective fortifications without using appropriate air defence systems," Naiiem explained.
Background:
- During the missile attack early on 11 April, Russia attacked two thermal power plants owned by DTEK (Ukraine's largest private investor in energy), seriously damaging the equipment there.
- The Trypillia TPP was completely destroyed by the Russian attack.
- The loss of the Trypillia TPP will have a negative impact on Ukraine’s energy supply. Ukraine will have less capacity to cover its electricity consumption needs during peak hours.
