From South to North: Ukrainian pavilion opened at Malta Biennale – photo
A Ukrainian exhibition space has been presented at the Malta Biennale. The exhibition, part of an international contemporary art project, is dedicated to the liberation of Ukrainians and is presented by artist Alevtyna Kakhidze.

Details: Olena Zelenska, who greeted the participants of the exhibition, said that the From South to North project explores the experience of the war unleashed by Russia through the prism of Odesa. She said that the city has changed a lot since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, but the people continue to reconsider reality in art despite constant bombardments and destruction.
Quote: "I would like the guests of the Biennale from all over the world to see themselves in Ukrainian Odesa, in Ukraine itself, first of all. To see a civilization and culture that is fighting against chaos. And is not allowing itself and others to be destroyed," Zelenska stressed.
The title From South to North symbolically unites Odesa and Malta – the south of Ukraine and the south of the Mediterranean. The exhibition takes visitors from one seaside city to the other and tells the story of the imperial past they have encountered.
Alevtyna Kakhidze's project consists of a video project created in collaboration with artist Roman Khimei along with installations. It was proposed by the Past/Future/Art memory culture platform in partnership with the Odesa National Art Museum, NOS Visual Art Production from Italy, and the Ukrainian Institute.
The Ukrainian exhibition space is located in two halls of the nineteenth-century Villa Portelli. The curators of the exhibition are Kateryna Semeniuk and Oksana Dovgopolova.
About the Malta Biennale
The Malta Biennale (maltabiennale.art 2024) is a new international exhibition of contemporary art in Europe. It opened on 13 March and will run until 31 May 2024. The event aims to rethink global perceptions of art and society "based on ideas originating from the deep south of the European continent".
The Biennale is organised by Heritage Malta, the Maltese national agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage, Arts Council Malta, the national agency for development and investment in the cultural and creative sectors, and the National Art Museum MUŻA. The event is being held under the patronage of UNESCO and the president of Malta.
