A total of 73% of Ukrainians state that they are ready to endure the war for as long as necessary, while an additional 3% are prepared to endure it for a long period of time such as another year.

Source: results of a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) on 5-10 February

Details: In addition, 3% are willing to endure the war for another half a year, and 18% feel they can endure it for several months.

Sociologists note that the situation has not changed since May 2022. At that time, 71% were willing to endure the war as long as necessary, and in December 2023, the percentage increased to 73%. Such sentiments are observed in all regions.

Quote from the KIIS: "Although after almost two years of large-scale combat, we are observing some decrease in faith in the Victory of Ukraine, the absolute majority of Ukrainians continue to maintain optimism. So, as of the beginning of February 2024, 89% of Ukrainians generally believed in the Victory of Ukraine, in particular, 60% of them were definitely convinced of this. In May 2022, 95% believed in Victory and of them 80% were definitely convinced of it."

Details: Currently, only 4% are unequivocally convinced or more inclined to think that Russia will win (in May 2022, 1% of individuals gave such a response).

Sociologists emphasise that in all regions, no less than 80% believe in Ukraine's victory, with at least 57% being unequivocally convinced.

However, when assessing the current situation on the front, respondents are more restrained.

In response to the question of which side currently has the advantage on the battlefield, 24% said it is Ukraine, and 15% Russia. At the same time, almost half of Ukrainians (47%) believe that the situation on the battlefield does not favour either side.

Residents of different regions have quite similar views on the situation on the battlefield, as emphasised by KIIS.

The study was conducted from 5 to 10 February. A total of 1202 respondents (aged 18 years and older) living in all oblasts of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) were interviewed using telephone interviews based on a random sample of mobile numbers. Residents of the temporarily occupied territories could not be included in the sample, and the survey was not issued to citizens abroad.

Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 3.2% for indicators close to 50%, 2.7% for indicators close to 25%, 2.1% for indicators close to 10%, and 1.4% for indicators close to 5%.

In times of war, a certain systematic deviation is added in addition to the specified formal error. However, sociologists are convinced that the results obtained retain high representativeness and allow for a fairly reliable analysis of public sentiment.
