Explosions heard in Crimea for the second time in one day

Explosions rang out in the temporarily occupied town of Saky in Crimea on 4 January and the Russians have reported an "attack".

Details: Local news channels reported explosions in Saky. Ovdienko wrote about the "attack" on the Saky-Yevpatoriia coast. In addition, locals spoke on Telegram about the Black Sea Fleet’s attempts to "repulse the attack" near Sevastopol.

Crimean social media outlets report explosions near the Kerch Strait, calling it "air defence response", and the occupiers have also blocked the Crimean (Kerch) Bridge.

There are also reports of explosions near Sevastopol and Novorossiysk. A photo of the alleged air defence response in Novorossiysk, in the south of Russia, is posted on social media.

Background:

  • On 4 January, explosions were reported in Yevpatoriia and Sevastopol, two cities in temporarily occupied Crimea. Russia’s Defence Ministry is claiming that 10 missiles were destroyed over the peninsula.
  • The Strategic Communications Directorate of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that at around 15:00 on 4 January, the Defence Forces hit a command post of the Russian occupation forces near Sevastopol.
