Zelenskyy speaks with Italian Prime Minister chairing G7 in 2024
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on 4 January, whose country is chairing the Group of Seven in 2024.

Details: The president thanked Italy for its support of Kyiv and reported on the situation at the front and the latest Russian large-scale missile attacks on Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said Meloni reaffirmed her readiness to continue to assist in strengthening Ukrainian air defence. The parties also discussed the possibility of joint defence production.
In addition, the leaders mentioned the preparation for the advisors' meeting on the Peace Formula that will take place in Davos in a few weeks and instructed the teams to intensify bilateral work on security obligations for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also mentioned Italy's support for Ukraine at the G7 and European Union levels.
"Giorgia and I also discussed the issue of financial and political support for Ukraine by the European Union. Italy stays with us in this, and it gives confidence not only to Ukraine but also to everyone who wants our Europe to withstand the Russian attacks," the president concluded.
Background:
- From 1 January, Italy has taken over the presidency of the G7, replacing Japan in this role.
- The G7 Group consists of the United States, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Japan, and the EU as an association. Russia was expelled from this format after the occupation of Crimea in 2014.
