The representatives of the German Greens and the Free Democratic Party have acted against the proposition of the opposition Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) to supply Ukraine with the Taurus missiles, despite calling for it for several months themselves.

Details: Spiegel gained access to the statement of several MPs from the Green Party in which they explain their motivation.

Quote: "Considering its capabilities, Ukraine will only successfully protect itself from the Russian war of annihilation if it is able to strike military facilities, such as ammunition storages, supply routes and command posts located far from the frontline. So we approve the supply of European and American cruise missiles, as we are convinced that Germany also can and must provide these weapons."

Yet they accuse the CDU and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) of only doing this for headlines. "Sadly, the current proposition of the CDU/CSU fraction is aimed solely at a tactical advantage in internal political debates in the Federative Republic of Germany," the Greens state.

"The parliamentary group refuses to approve the requests for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration, which is a major issue for Ukraine and its society," the Greens complain.  Among the about 30 signees are MPs Sebastian Schäfer, Anton Hofreiter, Sara Nanni, Jamila Schäfer, Paula Piechotta, Till Steffen and Robert Wagener.

The Greens, in their turn, urge the federal government to do more for Ukraine. "In order to make its defence more effective, Ukraine needs additional equipment, especially ammunition," they state.

There is also an agreement to vote against the proposition of the CDU in a parliamentary group of independent democrats, despite the fact that Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Head of the Defence Committee of Germany, is one of the most vocal supporters of the supply of Taurus to Kyiv.

The CDU/CSU wanted to submit Taurus supply for voting before, but a corresponding proposition was handed over to the committees by a coalition majority.

Even if the majority in the Bundestag votes for the supply of Taurus, only the federal government, specifically the Federal Security Service, will make the final decision concerning the arms export.

Background:

  • Earlier, it was reported that the CDU, the largest opposition party in Germany, wants to hold the voting concerning supplying Ukraine with the Taurus cruise missiles in the Bundestag.
  • At the same time, the German government continues to reject the supply of Taurus to Ukraine.
