Quote from Pritzker: "[At the official meetings – ed.] we talked about the Accounting Chamber."
Details: On 10 January, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s Parliament) appointed Olha Pishchanska as chairwoman of the Accounting Chamber without waiting for the reform of this body to be completed and despite numerous warnings from the US and other G7 member states, meaning that verification checks could be avoided.
Penny Pritzker stressed the importance of such checks.
"We talked with Ukrainian officials about the importance of not only passing laws, and not only appointing people to positions, but also ensuring that there is a sufficient verification procedure. Screening of candidates is necessary so that both Ukrainians and others have confidence in the oversight carried out by Ukrainian institutions," she explained.
Pritzker did not specify Washington's expectations in this regard, noting only that the United States "would not stay silent" if other appointments were made without verification.
At the same time, she gave a generally positive assessment of Ukraine’s reforms.
"The purpose of this visit is to express admiration for the progress that Ukraine has made in terms of anti-corruption legislation ahead of the start of negotiations with the EU," Pritzker said.
The US Special Representative for Ukraine's Economic Recovery was reported to have arrived in Kyiv accompanied by a business delegation.
