US sanctions Belarusian defence companies
On Tuesday, 5 December, the US Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against 11 Belarusian entities and seven individuals involved in repressions, the corrupt financial enrichment of the Lukashenko regime, and complicity in Russia's war against Ukraine.

Details: The sanctions list includes the secretary general of the Belarusian Red Cross, Dmitry Shevtsov, who has admitted to being involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children, leading to the suspension of Belarus' membership of the International Red Cross.
The US Treasury Department has named oligarch Alexander Shakutin and his Amkodor holding company, which is planning to produce drones and artillery systems, as well as oligarchs Pavel Topuzidis and Viktor Petrovich, who jointly own Tabak Invest, a leading tobacco producer in Belarus, and are suspected of smuggling tobacco to Russia.
The state-owned Belarusian Cement Company, logging firm Bellesbumprom, logistics provider Beltamosmoservice, and its CEO Vadim Babarykin are listed among other entities that bankroll the Belarusian regime.
The Belarusian defence sector was targeted by the US sanctions, particularly the Vavilov Minsk Mechanical Plant, which produces optical sights, and its CEO, Alexander Moroz; Zenit BelOMO holding, which produces military sights, and its head, Nikolai Gaischuk; and the LEMT Scientific and Technical Centre at BelOMO and its CEO, Alexei Shkadarevich.
Belarusian state-owned radar systems manufacturer Alevkurp, microelectronics developer Planar, industrial electronics, plastics and transport manufacturers, and the Horizont group of companies are now subject to new US restrictions for their involvement in Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Background: In August, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against some Belarusian individuals and legal entities to mark the third anniversary of mass protests in Belarus over the rigged presidential election.
