Ukraine is fighting for Europe's future – Finnish Defence Minister

In his Christmas greeting to the peacekeeping forces, Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen has mentioned Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Details: Häkkänen pointed out that "Russia's policy of force has created a sense of insecurity and uncertainty in Europe, and indirectly around the world".

"We have seen painful proof that a great power can feel empowered to interfere in the choices of its smaller neighbour and is willing to use military force to achieve its own goals," he added.

The Finnish defence minister stressed that it is not just a matter of Ukraine's fate but that of all the countries neighbouring Russia: "There is a war going on in Ukraine for the future of the whole of Europe."

Häkkänen also mentioned that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine prompted Finland to abandon its neutrality, become a NATO member and sign a defence cooperation agreement with the United States.
