Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief: No state secrets were discussed in bugged office

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, does not consider the discovery of bugging devices in his office as evidence of pressure and does not think state secrets could have been discussed in the office.

Details: Asked whether he considered the discovery of a bugging device in his office as a gesture of pressure, Zaluzhnyi replied: "No, as war. The investigation will show what it could be."

Zaluzhnyi revealed that he was to have entered the office where the bugging device was found at 07:00.

Asked whether any state secrets could have been discussed in the office, he said, "I don’t think so. The room had been used before, but there had been a long break, so this happened just before my meeting."

  • On 17 December, Ukrainska Pravda sources reported that bugging devices had been found in the offices of Valerii Zaluzhnyi and some of his staff. The room was to have been the Commander-in-Chief’s new office and was being inspected prior to his moving in.
  • The Security Service of Ukraine stated that a technical device, which was not in working order, had been found in one of the potential locations for Valerii Zaluzhnyi’s office. Law enforcement officers have opened a criminal investigation.
  • On 18 December, the General Staff officially announced the discovery of the bugging devices.
