Leaders of several EU countries have assured reporters they will be able to reach an agreement on a €50 billion financial support programme for Ukraine, with Hungary's vote included, in January 2024.

Quote from Estonian PM Kaja Kallas: "I can assure you that Ukraine will not be left without support. There is a clear political will of 26 countries to provide this assistance... and we will find a solution."

Details: Kallas noted that the EU would prioritise trying to approve the aid for Ukraine as a joint decision as originally planned, especially since the alternative is procedurally more complicated.

"I am quite sure that we will have a decision by January, since 26 countries want that," she added.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo believes a joint decision "needs a few more weeks". "However, we have a signal for Ukraine: we are ready to support you; we just need to work out a few more details for a solution," he added.

"Certainly, unity is precious to us. Therefore, it is probably better to invest more effort to ensure that this is a decision of all countries," commented Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.

Asked whether he believed that January 2024 was a realistic deadline for approving the aid, Nausėda said he did.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also said he was confident that the financial assistance for Ukraine would be approved.

European Council President Charles Michel refused to be drawn on whether the EU would override Orbán's veto, which is possible in regard to financial issues. However, he stressed that the EU would honour its financial commitments to help Ukraine.
