Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Kremlin-controlled Chechnya, has insisted that his 15-year-old son Adam did the right thing by beating up Mykyta Zhuravel, a man who had been detained in connection with a Quran burning, and that it would have been even better if he had killed him.

Details: Kadyrov said that since the court had not decided to punish his son, the Chechen authorities ought not to either.

Quote: "What should he be punished for? For beating up an agent, a man who burned the Quran? It would have been good if he had killed him."

Details: Kadyrov added that his son "would have considered it an honour" if he had been punished for beating up the man.

Background:

  • Mykyta Zhuravel, 19, originally from Ukraine, was accused of setting fire to a copy of the Quran in Volgograd, Russia. In August, he was beaten up by Kadyrov's 15-year-old son while in detention.
  • Ramzan Kadyrov released a video of the assault in September and said he was proud of his son's actions.
  • Rashid Temrezov, the head of Karachay-Cherkessia in Russia’s North Caucasus region, later awarded Adam Kadyrov the republic’s highest state prize - the Order For Merit of the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic. This is the third award the teenager has received since he beat up the detained man.
