Quote: "Like before, Putin is filled with determination to put Ukraine on its knees by military means."

Details: Scholz added that Putin expects the international support for Ukraine to decrease. "The danger that his expectations may work out cannot be discarded," the chancellor said.

He also noted how US President Joe Biden is fighting for the allocation of funds to support Ukraine in his country.

Scholz remarked that there is still no unanimity in the EU as to how Ukraine’s budget can be stabilised in the near future, meaning that the plans to allocate €50 billion in the next four years reached a stalemate.

Background:

  • Earlier Scholz stated that Germany may be ready for the increase of the support for Ukraine amid the weakening of the support by others.
  • He reported that the second Patriot system which Germany had promised to send to Kyiv would start operating in Ukraine this year.
  • On 13 December the government coalition of Germany presented the details of the agreement concerning the approved 2024 budget after a month of tense negotiations since Berlin is planning to supply Kyiv with bilateral assistance of €8 billion.
