Quote from Biden: "We want to see Ukraine win the war. Winning means Ukraine is a sovereign, independent nation. And it can afford to defend itself today and deter further aggression."
Details: He added that there is strong bipartisan support for Ukraine. A small number of Republicans do not want to support Ukraine, but they do not represent a majority: "We are negotiating to get the funding we need. [I’m] not making promises, but [I’m] hopeful we can get there."
Background:
- On 12 December, following a closed-door meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Joe Biden said he would not give up his support for Ukraine, as it is vital for the whole world.
- Biden underscored that Congress has bipartisan support for Ukraine and he is willing to make concessions on the issue of US border security funding, and that is how democracy works.
- The US president also noted that history will judge harshly how they stood up for freedom, as Putin "will keep going".
- The US president emphasised that NATO is unquestionably a part of Ukraine's future. Ukraine will become a NATO member, but the US must make sure that it wins the war.
