Details: In total, 60.5% of Ukrainians believe that Ukraine can join the European Union in less than ten years. Of these, a third, or 20.6% of the total number of respondents, say that this will happen in two years, as declared by the Ukrainian authorities.
Another 19.9% of respondents said that Ukraine's accession to the EU would be realistic in three to four years, 14.3% believe it will happen in five to six years, while 5.7% claim this will take seven to nine years.
Only 3.7% of the polled Ukrainians believe that Ukraine will be able to become a member of the European Union in 10-15 years, while another 2% believe that this will happen in more than 15 years, and 6.1% chose the option "never."
Almost 28% could not determine how much time Ukraine would take to join the European Union or refused to answer this question.
The survey commissioned by ZN.UA was conducted by the social service of the Razumkov Centre from 28 September to 4 October 2023 using the face-to-face method in 22 oblasts of Ukraine and the city of Kyiv. 2,019 respondents aged 18 years and older were interviewed. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%.
Background:
- In a report published on 8 November, the European Commission recommended that EU states start accession negotiations with Ukraine, but Kyiv must implement further reforms.
- To start formal negotiations, Ukraine should receive a "green light" from the EU on its fulfilment of the four criteria put forward by the European Commission (the assessment is expected in March), as well as hold an intergovernmental conference on the approval of the negotiation framework, screen Ukrainian legislation, and then open the negotiation chapters.
