Railway sabotage is still problem for Russia – UK intelligence

UK intelligence has said that sabotage on the railways by anti-war activists continues to be a serious problem for Russia.

Details: The ministry cites an investigation by the Russian independent media outlet Mediazona, according to which, as of October 2023, 76 cases of railway sabotage had gone to court. At least 137 people, the vast majority of whom are under the age of 24, have been prosecuted.

Since the beginning of 2023, warnings have appeared on key Russian railway infrastructure facilities that sabotage can be punishable by up to life imprisonment under the Russian Criminal Code.

UK intelligence noted that Russia's military logistics, including supplies for the war against Ukraine, continue to depend on the railway.

As virtually all methods of open dissent are banned in Russia, sabotage continues to be attractive to a minority of young people as a way of protesting against the "Special Military Operation".
