The UK’s Defence Intelligence says the Russians have made little progress in the battle for Avdiivka in Donetsk Oblast, and it has cost them thousands of casualties.

Quote: "Although modest, this advance [of the Russian army – ed.] likely represents one of the greatest Russian gains since spring 2023. It has cost the units involved thousands of casualties."
Details: UK Defence Intelligence noted that the Russians have not stopped trying to encircle Avdiivka. They have managed to move the front line forward by up to 2 km since the beginning of October.
The update added that these actions are bringing the Russians closer to the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine hold one of their main defensive positions.
While Avdiivka has become a salient or bulge in the Ukrainian contact line, Ukraine retains control of a roughly 7-km-wide corridor through which it continues to supply the city.
Background:
- In a previous update, UK Intelligence reported that over the past six weeks, Russian forces have suffered their heaviest losses since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
- The agency previously reported that Russia had moved strategic air defence systems from Kaliningrad Oblast in November to replace those lost in the war with Ukraine.
