Famine Way: Ukrainian developers working on video game about Holodomor famine
Ukrainian developers have released the first trailer for Famine Way, a video game dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor [The Holodomor was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine that lasted from 1932 to 1933 and claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians – ed.].
The game describes the horrors of the 1932-1933 Holodomor in Ukraine through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl, the Stellarium.gaming studio says on Facebook.
The developers explained that the 2D game has a unique drawing style and seeks to tell the tragedy of the Holodomor to a broad audience.
The game is set in a "lifeless" village in Kharkiv Oblast. The game's protagonists are "two orphaned souls".
"This is a story about famine, despair, grief and hope, about the realities of the 1932-33 Holodomor in Ukraine through the eyes of little Olena and her companion stork. They are two orphaned souls who set out searching for life and lost family," the studio reported.
They note that the player must help Olena and the stork find their family.
The developers say the users will have a chance to immerse themselves in the protagonist's perspective and see the circumstances of that time.
"Our goal is to depict the horror experienced by the Ukrainian people through the eyes of little Olenka [diminutive to Olena]. To highlight the criminal actions of the Soviet government," the studio added.
The Famine Way, a game available for PCs and mobile phones, will be released in 2024.
