Slovak PM calls Russia's aggression against Ukraine "frozen conflict"

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has reiterated during a visit to Prague that he does not support the supply of weapons to Ukraine to counter Russian aggression and advocates negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

Details: Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala admitted that Prague and Bratislava take different approaches to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but said that Slovakia’s actions at the European level will be very important.

Quote from Fiala: "It is important for us that the Slovak government and the prime minister support the common European policy at the European level. There are no signs that this is not the case."

In turn, Fico said that he would discuss humanitarian aid with his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal by phone, but reiterated that no military aid would be provided. Nor does he see any need to visit Ukraine at present.

Fico said his government considers the "conflict" - Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine - to be "frozen", does not believe the policy of sanctions against Russia is effective, and advocates a "cessation of the hostilities in Ukraine" and the start of negotiations.

At the same time, he stressed that there has been no change in Slovakia's position as far as values are concerned: "We have no disputes with regard to values. We have stated very clearly that the use of Russian military force is a violation of international law."

After being appointed Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico confirmed that he would not support military assistance to Ukraine. He also opposes EU sanctions against Russia and wants to block Ukraine's accession to NATO.
