The battles around Krynky in the lower reaches of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast are extremely unpleasant for the Russian army, although they are smaller in scale than some other battles in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Details: UK analysts stated that fighting continues around the village of Krynky in Ukraine’s south, where Ukrainian marines hold a bridgehead on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River.

Ground fighting is characterised by confusing, disorderly infantry clashes and artillery duels in difficult forested terrain.

Ukraine has been particularly effective in its use of small attack drones, while the Russian Air Force has been flying a significant number of sorties in support of frontline troops, mostly launching munitions from outside the range of Ukraine's air defence system.

The fighting around Krynky is smaller in scale than some of the major battles of the war, but it will be seen as extremely unpleasant by the Russian leadership.

Quote: "Russia withdrew from the west bank of the Dnipro River a year ago, almost certainly aiming to hold Ukrainian forces west of the river, keep the sector quiet, and free up Russian forces elsewhere."

Background:

  • The day before, the UK Ministry of Defence noted that Russia had accumulated significant stockpiles of cruise missiles ahead of winter.
  • UK intelligence also believes that the frontline in Ukraine is unlikely to change in the near future.
