At a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed officials to develop a solution to prevent the country from being paralysed by the lengthy air-raid warnings that are issued when MiG fighter jets take off.

Quote: "I instructed the Ministry of Defence, the General Staff and the Cabinet of Ministers to propose a solution so that the take-off of Kinzhal hypersonic missile carriers do not paralyse the country for hours."

Details: It is noted that at the meeting, the president listened to an extensive report by Defence Minister Rustem Umierov on Ukrainian soldiers’ needs in terms of vehicles, missiles, ammunition, equipment and services – everything necessary for the further liberation of Ukraine.

Other issues on the agenda included the implementation of current contracts, contracts for the next year with both Ukrainian defence companies and foreign suppliers, and the systematisation of anticipated international technical assistance.

There was also a report from Strategic Industry Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin on increasing production at Ukrainian defence companies.

Zelenskyy received reports on the situation at the front from Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi and commanders Oleksandr Syrskyi, Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, Eduard Moskalov and Yurii Sodol.

Background:

  • The Air Force attributes the prolonged flight times of Russian MiG-31K fighters in the air recently to the fact that they are practising refuelling in mid-air.
  • The question of whether it is reasonable to issue air-raid warnings has been raised again, given that business and the economy are suffering, services do not function, and children cannot go to school during the prolonged air-raid warnings.
  • The Air Force noted that the decision on whether to rescind an air-raid warning for the duration of lengthy flights by Russian MiG-31K fighter jets can only be made by Ukraine’s senior leadership. Meanwhile, the threat of Kinzhal missile attacks remains real.
  • Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat explained that if there is a ballistic missile threat, an air-raid warning is issued in the oblasts that ballistic missiles can reach. MiG-31Ks (and the Kinzhal air-to-surface missiles launched from them) can reach any part of Ukraine.
