Ukrainian drone strikes on the Russian resort city of Sochi are an example of how the war directly affects Russians far from the contact line.

Details: The intelligence assessed two attacks on the city within two weeks. So, on 1 October 2023, the city of Sochi was hit by unmanned aerial vehicles. The media reported that a helipad at Sochi airport was damaged.

The previous attack on 20 September 2023 caused a large fire at an oil depot near the airport. This was the first recorded strike on the area since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

UK analysts note that Sochi is a popular holiday destination, closely connected with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and serves as a summer base for many representatives of the Russian elite.

Quote: "Strikes near the city mark a further example of the war directly affecting Russia's population well away from the Ukrainian border."
