US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan earlier told CNN that his Israeli counterparts had informed him of the decision to resume water supply to Gaza.

A US lawmaker told The Times of Israel on Saturday, 14 October, that a senior Israeli official had indicated to them that Jerusalem would allow food, water and medicine into Gaza after imposing a siege on the area. Meanwhile, Israel "appears to be gearing up for a ground operation to destroy Hamas",  The Times of Israel reported.

"The US lawmaker clarified that Israel has not committed to letting in electricity and fuel supplies into Gaza, which they say are not covered by the same rules under laws of armed conflict," the publication added.

Meanwhile, the US said it was concerned by the possibility of an escalation of the war between Israel and Hamas and the prospect of Iran’s direct involvement.

Speaking on CBS, Sullivan said that a new front of fighting could emerge on the Israeli-Lebanese border.

He also said that the US cannot rule out that Iran will decide to intervene directly in the conflict, adding that the US must be prepared for all possible contingencies.

Background:

  • On 9 October it was reported that Hamas militants have taken over 100 people hostage during the attack on Israel, including high-ranking officials, and another 30 Israelis have been captured by militants from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group.
  • On the same day, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced that he had ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, with the Israeli military blocking even food supplies to the region.
  • On 11 October, the Gaza Strip lost power supply as its only power plant ran out of fuel.
  • On 12 October, Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz said that Israel would not supply water, power, or fuel to the Gaza Strip until Hamas militants release Israeli hostages.
