Details: According to Tîlvăr, it is so far unknown when the fragments of the Russian drone fell near the village of Plauru in Romania and whether they are related to the attack the Ukrainian side reported at the beginning of the week.

Tîlvăr stated that on 5 September, he informed the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis that no parts of the UAVs had been detected on the country's territory.

Yet in the evening of that same day, the Romanian Navy discovered metal fragments near the village of Plauru, which borders the city of Izmail in Ukraine's Odesa Oblast.

After that, the investigative measures were initiated on the site of the incident.

"Yesterday in the evening…our units discovered the fragments that could be the components of a drone. They…have collected samples and are now analysing them," Tîlvăr remarked.

He added that the first conclusions about the absence of drone fragments were based on the reports of the Defence Ministry. He later told President Iohannis about it.

Background:

  • Earlier, Romania confirmed that fragments resembling those of a drone were found near the Danube banks on the Romanian side.
  • Prior to this, the Romanian side categorically denied that the drones Russia used to attack Ukraine's south could have fallen on Romanian territory.
  • On 4 September, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, with reference to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, reported that during the Russian attack on Ukrainian ports on the Danube river on the night of 2-3 September, Russian Shahed drones fell down on the territory of Romania, and added the photo of the explosion from the other side of Danube.
  • The Romanian side basically denied this incident and claimed that "combat means used by Russia did not pose a direct military threat for the national territory or territorial waters of Romania".
  • Later, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reported that Ukraine had photo evidence of the crash of Shahed drones on Romanian territory.
