Information about Surovikin removed from Russia's Defence Ministry website
A page containing information about General Sergey Surovikin, the ex-commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces (AF), has disappeared from the Russian Defence Ministry’s website.
Source: The Moscow Times, Astra
Details: Surovikin is also not on the list of the department's management.
The day before, Russian Telegram channels drew attention to the fact that Surovikin was still listed as the head of the AF on the Defence Ministry’s website. This information soon disappeared.
At the same time, a search on the site map shows Surovikin’s name under the "leadership" section. But when clicking on the link, the page is empty.
According to the Russian media, this is the first official confirmation of Surovikin's resignation.
Background:
- Earlier, Russian mass media reported on Surovikin's resignation with reference to various sources. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Putin's press secretary Dmytro Peskov avoided public answers to questions about Surovikin.
- On 5 September, The New York Times, citing its sources, reported that detained Russian General Sergei Surovikin had been released several days after the death of Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash.
- Almost from the moment of his appointment, a number of Western media referred to Surovikin as "Prigozhin's man". According to some media outlets, he knew about the Wagner uprising before it began.
