Quote: "Through the first half of September 2023, heavy fighting has continued around the islands in the lower Dnipro in Kherson Oblast, which currently marks the front line. Both sides have launched raids with teams in small boats against the islands and against the opposite riverbanks."
Details: The UK analysts pointed out that there is a fair possibility that Russian operations in the area have intensified after it came under the responsibility of the newly created 40th Army Corps of the Russian Federation.
The number of forces involved is relatively small compared to other fronts, but both sides consider the area strategically important.
It also serves to distract each side’s adversary forces from the intense fighting in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts.
Background:
- On 18 September, the UK MoD stated that Russia had likely reinforced the heavily casualty-ridden 58th Combined Arms Army with additional air assault forces units on the Orikhiv front over the past two weeks.
- The Ukrainian Operational Command South stated that Russia would like to build up its forces on the Kherson front but lacks the resources to do so, so it is rather regrouping.
