Details: The report indicates that Russian troops are setting up additional checkpoints and anti-tank fortifications around Tokmak, located about 16 kilometres from the current line of contact, and digging new trenches in the area held by the 58th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Federation.
"Tokmak is preparing to become a lynchpin of Russia’s second main line of defences," the UK MoD believes.
UK Defence Intelligence suggests that the city's improving defences are likely indicative of Russia's growing concern over the tactical penetration by Ukrainian forces through the first main line of defence in the northern part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Background:
- The Ukrainian military has made progress in recent weeks in its offensive against the Russian-held city of Tokmak, a vital barrier between Ukrainian forces and the city of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
- The Ukrainian side stated that in recent days, the Russian proxy "passport office" has been evacuated from Tokmak to Melitopol and that Russia's FSB officers and part of the occupying administration have been taken away.
