Leader of Republicans in Senate: Supporting Ukraine is in our direct interests
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has urged his fellow Republicans not to cut off aid to Ukraine despite differences among them.

Details: He said the US is arming Ukraine not out of a sense of charity but because it is in the direct interest of the United States to support a friendly democracy.
"This isn’t a debate about abstract principles or philanthropy," McConnell said, stressing that it’s Ukraine that defends itself from aggression, not the US.
He noted that if the US fails to help Ukraine stop Russia in its tracks, there is every reason to believe that this will further encourage Russia and China.
McConnell pointed out that two of America's most powerful adversaries have forged a "boundless friendship," referring to the cooperation between Russia and China.
Background: Earlier, the Pentagon stated that it had guaranteed funding for military support for Ukraine until the end of the fiscal year on 30 September.
In early August, the administration of US President Joe Biden asked Congress to approve a supplemental US$22 billion in support for Ukraine by the end of the year.
The media suggest that it may be more challenging to approve the funds this time than in previous cases.
Republicans in Congress are under great pressure to support their fellow party member, former President Donald Trump, who has questioned the need for such significant support for Ukraine, and support for assistance to Ukraine has declined among American voters.
