Russia attempted to attack civilian vessel in Ukraine with missiles on 24 August

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that Russia attacked a civilian cargo ship in the port of Odesa with missiles on 24 August.

Details: Sunak noted that two Kalibr missiles launched by the Russian Federation from the Black Sea were aimed at a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the port. 

"Thanks to declassified intelligence, we know the Russian military targeted a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea with multiple missiles on the 24th of August," Sunak said in a report to parliament on a G20 summit.

Among the missiles were two Kalibr missiles fired from a Black Sea Fleet missile carrier. However, all air targets were successfully shot down by Ukrainian air defence.

Later, on 26 August, it was reported that the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Primus had left the port of Odesa and was heading towards the Bulgarian port of Varna.

Ukraine has opened registration for merchant ships and their owners to use temporary routes to and from Odesa ports.

Ukraine arranged temporary corridors in the Black Sea for merchant ships travelling to and from Ukrainian ports.

The last ship with Ukrainian food left the port of Odesa on 16 July. 

Russia unilaterally withdrew from the Black Sea grain deal on 17 July, and has since repeatedly attacked port grain infrastructure.
